During this trip you will ride a Kawasaki KLX 150cc. If you prefer a Honda XR 250cc engine, this is possible at an additional cost (see price data), please indicate this when registering. The 250 cc are available in limited quantities.
Travel guidance
This trip is guided by various motorcycle trail guides, each with their own specialty. There will probably be a total of four different supervisors.
Support car
A Vietnamese support car will accompany the entire trip, so it will follow the group through all countries. This is driven by our regular Vietnamese driver. The support car will transport the luggage, parts and tools. There is room in the support car for any duo passengers who do not want or cannot ride on the back.
Mechanic
Our regular Vietnamese mechanic is also present in the support car. and a local mechanic drives along in this car. The mechanic maintains the motorcycles along the way and is also a reserve rider in case someone cannot or does not want to drive themselves.
Difficulty of the journey
During this journey we do not drive at high altitudes or through extremely deserted areas. We ride light motorcycles, which make the trip very accessible to riders who have never taken an adventurous motorcycle trip before. The daily distances are not long, so there is plenty of time and opportunity to stop along the way to take photos or visit villages. However, participation in the extremely busy traffic in and around Hanoi can be difficult. You should also take into account that the main roads that we avoid as much as possible can be busy with trucks that do not follow the traffic rules very closely.
Off Road:
approximately 20% of the journey is on unpaved roads and/or paths. These routes are not very difficult and very easy to do without any off-road experience or off-road training in advance. However, if the weather is worse than expected, these off-road days can be difficult.
Clothing
A helmet, motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, good sturdy (motorcycle) trousers with protection or with loose knee protection and sturdy high (mountain) shoes are mandatory. It can become very warm in the lower parts of the journey, especially in spring and autumn. A summer motorcycle jacket with protection is therefore recommended. On colder parts of the mountains you can wear extra clothing under your jacket if necessary. Good sunglasses are also useful and a helmet with a visor that protects against dust. The rainy season in the north of Vietnam is from June to the end of August. We plan our trips before or after. However, the weather can ignore all forecasts, so you should take a possible rain shower into account on all trips. Finally, it can get quite cold in the mountains in December and January, so it is advisable to take warm motorcycle clothing with you.
Driving license
In Vietnam you can officially drive a motorcycle with an international driving license since January 1, 2016. The Dutch driver's license is not valid in Vietnam without an IRB (international driver's license). IRB model 1968 is accepted.
China part
The China part must be organized well in advance. Separate permits must be applied for for each motorcycle and a Chinese driver's license must be applied for each time you drive. Most of this happens prior to the trip. But many things still need to be dealt with at the border crossing. We have set aside half a day for this in the schedule.
Visa
A visa is only required in advance for the China part and for Laos. All other countries can be arranged at the border. You will receive more information about this in time for the trip.
More details about the trip and what to take with you can be found in the travel manual that you will receive approximately one month before departure.
