Japan cities and villages

We have a choice of different types of motorcycles for this trip. This choice is entirely dependent on availability at the time of rental. Everyone will ride on a different type. All the motorcycles will be 400cc unless a lighter one has been requested.

Physical challenges
This is one of the least demanding trips in the "adventure and culture” category. We only ride on surfaced roads. Furthermore, even though Honshu island is one of the most densely populated regions in the world, the narrow roads through the mountains are almost deserted, in stark contrast to the roads around Tokyo, Hiroshima and Osaka where it is very busy.

Accommodation
You will stay mostly in reasonable mid-range hotels. In Japan in particular it is a treat to stay in local traditional guesthouses. Such guesthouses are just as good quality as than regular hotels but are very special to stay in. We also stay a few nights in so-called Japanese Motor guesthouses where one can meet fellow motorcyclists according to the Japanese style.

Climate
It rains the most in the warm summer months. This means a hot muggy climate. We have chosen for September because the weather can be very cold in the winter months. In September there is still a small chance of rain but the temperature is still pleasant.

Clothing
The following items are mandatory: helmet, motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, a good hard wearing pair of (motorcycle) trousers with protection and solid high (mountain) boots. Due to the chance of rain it is recommended to bring a waterproof motorcycle jacket and extra warm long-sleeved shirts that you can wear over each other on colder days. Waterproof trousers or waterproof motorcycle trousers are also recommended.

Visa and Drivers License
Please check the Japanese Embassy or the Japanese Consulate for visa requirements. Furthermore, to join this trip a valid motorcycle drivers license is required and also an international driving permit (IDP).  Please buy an IDP that is valid in Japan before you leave.
