"Hotels and routes are prearranged by MotorTrails. The supplied GARMIN routes and the GARMIN navigation system were not working so I had to devise the routes myself. Too bad. Unfortunately not all the booked hotels were ryokans or hotels in the city center. Japan is very beautiful, especially if you head inland. The Japanese are very courteous but very distant. Found it very difficult to make any real contact (actually it simply did not happen) with them. Periodic contact with Motor Trails was fine (in spite of the time difference)."

"The Japan trip is an adventure that 6 years later still dominates my travel stories. There is no other country in the world as strange as Japan. Across the whole world I am capable of getting a feel for the local colour whether it be in Central Asia, Africa or Latin America. The motorcycles are very reliable, the distances not too demanding; the left-hand traffic and the food and accommodation make each day another adventure. The use of GPS as guide offers an interesting experience. Kyoto, Hiroshima and Tokyo were great cities to visit. The ryokans in rural areas are unique too."
