Tanzania Highlights

Day 1 – Home – Departure
For those who did not buy this tour as a package tour including the flight ticket, this day does not apply.

Day 2 – Arrival – Arusha
Karibu sana, welcome! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, located between Arusha and Moshi, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Arusha. As you drive into town, you'll notice the scenic views of Mount Meru standing tall in the background, and on clear days, even the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro might appear on the horizon. Arusha is considered the safari capital of Tanzania and serves as the gateway to some of Africa’s most famous national parks. It lies at an elevation of about 1,400 meters above sea level, giving it a pleasant year-round climate, warm during the day and cool at night. With a population of around 500,000 people, Arusha is a vibrant mix of cultures, markets, and history. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the chance to explore a bit of the town, relax at the hotel, or simply rest and recover from your journey before the adventure truly begins tomorrow.

Day 3 - Arusha - Mto Wa Mbu
The tour starts with the longest-riding day. It will be busy getting out of town but once on the main road, there will be very little traffic left. The first almost 180 km are on a very good straight asphalt road, we will cover this distance in a few hours. For the second part of the day we climb the steep ridge overlooking Lake Manyara, this gives a very beautiful view over the lake and surrounding plains. We pass small mountain villages and ride through the edges of the ridge until we come to the straight gravel road to Mto Wa Mbu.

Day 4 - Mto Wa Mbu - Longido
We leave the small town on an asphalt road, but soon we will turn to the north and ride gravel roads for the rest of the day. On the left, you see the outer walls of the Ngorongoro crater. This is a very deserted area with only a few villages on the way. Just below Lake Natron, we turn towards the east. On this stretch, you are very likely to see crossing Giraffes and herds of zebra, maybe even elephants. This part of the country is Maasai land, you will see young warriors coming out of the bush, dressed in their typical red robes. Longido is a very small local town. Even though we will stay in the best hotel available; it will still be basic.

Day 5 - Longido - Marangu
The morning starts with a rough ride through a sandy but beautiful area. Also, here you are likely to view wild animals. After hitting the tarmac, we are at the foot of the Kilimanjaro. We follow the ring road around the highest of African mountains. This road will touch the Kenyan border a few times. Kibo is the Maasai Name for the top of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. On the east side of the mountain, we will go more inland and follow single tracks through the forest, crossing small footbridges and rivers. The car cannot join us for this part of the journey. And if you are not comfortable with this part you can stay on the main road with the car.

Day 6 - Marangu - Mambo
The first bit is a good tarmac road, we will hit the main road from Arusha to Dar es Salaam and follow this one for a most of the day. The last few hour maybe the most spectacular of the tour. This is the climb up to the Usambara mountain range.. This is a very steep, narrow road, with very sharp bends. And after every bend the views get more impressive. Our hotel on top has similar views which you can enjoy while enjoying your cold after the ride beer.

Day 7 - Mambo - Same
We have crossed the mountain range to the nothern side, we descend again using another road with views over the Kenyan wetlands on the north. This will be only asphalted road for today. We ride through the lowlands between the Usambara and the Pare mountains. This is Masaai land, you will see them herding their goats aside of the road. The gravel road winds through marshlands with view on the mountain ranges. In the afternoon will will climb into the Pare mountains where vegetation is greener again. We ride single tracks, through the forests climbing up the mountain. Same is a small town.

Day 8 – Same – Daytrip Mkomazi
Same is not far from the Mkomazi National Park. This park is connected to Tsavo National Park on the Kenyan side of the border. Mkomazi is famous for its Rhino populations. We can use this day to take a safari in this park. Since it is out of the way for most tourists, there will not be as many safari cars around.

Day 9 - Same - Arusha
The last day of the tour will start with a short ride over the main road. But after the first coffee break we will climb up the mountains again for a few adventurous routes. We descend on the easternside to th shores of lake Jipe, using gravel and dirt road. We ride the gravel road around the mountain untill we hit the main road again for the last stretch back to Arusha.
