Colombia El Dorado

During this tour you ride AKT180 cc motorcycles, made in Colombia.

Difficulty and Offroad
We ride through  alternating landscapes and climate zones, so temperatures change quickly between hot/cold. We also often alternate between asphalt and  dirt roads. The dirt roads are sometimes challenging but never too difficult for someone without much experience. The distances are sometimes long, although usually there is enough time to make nice stops along the way. We do not spend the night at  very high altitudes.

Accommodation
Our overnight stays are in middle-class hotels. These are usually reasonable hotels in Colombia with a private bathroom and toilet. Since temperatures can rise, there is not always hot water present. In a few places, the hotels are simple but the location and atmosphere  is unique.

Climate
The climate in El Dorado is warm, humid, and overcast. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 71°F to 87°F and is rarely below 68°F or above 93°F.

Clothing
Mandatory items: helmet, motorcycle clothing with protection, good quality gloves, and high boots or sturdy shoes. Because of the temperature, we  recommended you bring breathable protective clothing. A good option is a protective armored shirt with an airy enduro shirt over the top. When you choose your motorcycle trousers, make sure they provide sufficient ventilation. We recommend an open face helmet and goggles with a good seal against dust.

Motor insurance
The motorcycles come with standard liability insurance. This insurance covers physical damage to third parties. Material damage to third parties is not insurable in Colombia. Damage to the motorcycle is not covered by the basic insurance. You are liable for costs of damage to the motorcycle caused by you.

Visa
Most nationalities are not required to apply for a Colombian visa in advance. On arrival at the airport, you will receive a stamp in your passport, which allows you to stay in the country for three weeks. Please check if this process also applies for your nationality.

Safety
Colombia, isn't that the country of the FARC? Yes, it is, and FARC is still active, though much less so than years ago and only in areas besieged by the army. The army knows very well the rebels' whereabouts and consequently closes these areas off to  foreigners, so it is not possible to enter a risky area.
