Day 1 - Arrival - Medellín
Welcome to Medellín! This once notorious city is currently a destination that should not be missed on a trip through Colombia. It is therefore also a great starting point for our motorcycle trip through this beautiful country in Latin America. We will be staying in the vibrant district of El Poblado, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars.
Day 2 - Medellín – Guatapé
After driving through Medellín for a while, we finally drive out of the city via one of the suburbs. We climb out of the Aburrá Valley and on the top of the mountain pass we have a beautiful view over the bustling city of Medellín. After this it is time to hit our first off-road tracks of this tour and we get to see the rural areas between Medellín and Guatapé. We have lunch in the small town of San Vincente and then head towards Guatapé. After following a river for a while, we soon get the first views of the beautiful surrounding in which the town of Guatapé is located. It is a water-rich area and both local and foreign tourists like to come here to relax. An extra stretch at the end of the day gives us beautiful views on the characteristic rock of Guatapé.
Day 3 - Guatapé – Puerto Berrio
From Guatapé we drive on an asphalt road to San Rafael. Enjoy cruising on this good road for a while, because the rest of the day we will be driving off-road mainly. Soon after San Rafael we turn into a jungle track and cross a dam which is used for the generation of energy. A bit later in the morning we will visit the town of San Roque. After having enjoyed a drink over there, we drive east into a sparsely populated area. We have lunch in Caracolí. From here onward we drive through an area where several railway lines run through and are being used by the local people in a special way. We spend the night in the cozy town of Puerto Berrio.
Day 4 - Puerto Berrio – Zapatoca
Today we drive to the town of Zapatoca. In the morning we first have to cover some distance and will therefore hit the main road for about 100 kilometers. Then we take a road through a lush terrain and drive towards the mountain range Cordillera Oriental. We start the day on sea level almost, but in the afternoon we climb up to 2000 meters of altitude on unpaved roads. We have lunch in the town of San Vicente de Chucurí. After this, it is another 50 kilometers to Zapatoca, but we will need some time for this. It is nice to walk towards the central square of Zapatoca in the late afternoon or in the evening.
Day 5 - Zapatoca – Duitama
A long but very beautiful day. In the morning we start with an off-road descent. After the descent we cross a river and shortly after that we will stop in Barichara for coffee. Then we drive via San Gil to Charalá. After lunch we’ll have a long stretch of off-road ahead of us and we will climb up to 3600 meters of altitude. It is lovely riding over here with beautiful views along the way. Duitama is the place where we will spend the night.
Day 6 - Duitama – Chiquinquirá
Today we visit the idyllic village of Villa de Leyva. This colonial village dates back to the sixteenth century. We start the day with driving on the main road in the direction of Tunja. Optionally we can make a small detour to avoid the main road partly. Just before Tunja we turn off the main road and drive through a beautiful area to Villa de Leyva. We will have lunch in Villa de Leyva at the immense Plaza Mayor. After lunch it takes us about one hour to get to Chiquinquirá.
Day 7 - Chiquinquirá – La Dorada
We are in perhaps the most beautiful department of Colombia, namely Boyacá. This department is also known for the independence battle which took place over here. We start the day with driving on an asphalt road in the direction of Otanche. From 2900 meters we will descend down to the Minero river, located at an altitude of about 400 meters. After the coffee break in Otanche we can choose between driving on either gravel or paved roads. If we choose to go off-road, then it promises to be a very long day. We will need to have an early depart in Chiquinquirá and we will arrive in La Dorada at the beginning of the evening most probably. Depending on the group and the weather conditions, this may or may not be an option. La Dorada is located at an altitude of 175 meters and it is therefore noticeably warmer over here compared to Chiquinquirá.
Day 8: La Dorada - Sonsón
After leaving La Dorada, we will almost immediately drive back into the mountains. The scenery we drive through is absolutely stunning again. We start with a stretch on a paved road, but the conditions of the road are bad. During our coffee break we enjoy a beautiful view over the La Miel river that flows through a mountainous landscape. We have lunch in a local restaurant in the town of Florencia. Today's unpaved roads are mainly dominated by stones and rocks. Sonsón is a town located about 100 kilometers southeast of Medellín.
Day 9 - Sonsón – Medellín
A relatively short day is planned for today. This offers the opportunity to explore Medellín in the afternoon already. After many kilometers of off-road, it is nice to stroll through the cozy district of El Poblado and relax a bit.
